Van Horne Newsletter/August and September 2019

Van Horne Mayor Marty Junge

Greetings Van Horne Area Residents!

Where has the summer gone? Football practice is happening and school will be starting soon. Remember with school beginning we will have a new batch of beginning drivers, bike riders and walkers heading to school, so time to be extra careful on the streets, and slow down.

We have looked into getting a radar speed sign that would help some drivers see how fast they are actually going in town. Evidently there are a lot of speedometers that don’t work. We will make a decision at the next council meeting.

We are finally done with the water looping and main replacement on the east end of town. I have to apologize to the residents that live along the route. It was a mess with all the rain and the project took a lot longer than was expected because of it. There are still some loose ends to tie up but the mess should be over. Since the project took so long we were late in letting the street pavers know when we were ready. They told us that it would be late September or early October before they could be here.

The seal coat that we put on the streets needs to have warm weather after applying so the rock gets melted into the tar, and we feel that would be too late and the first time we move snow all the rock would end up in your yards. The decision was made to get them early next summer and finish that project and do the rest of the streets needing repair then. With that said we will be doing some patch work where we dug across the streets and will be having a paver come in to finish the driveways that were torn up.

This is not what we wanted to do but thought it would be best in the long run. We also made a decision to have them do the seeding of the lawns, since it was raining every day. Well by the time they got it done, guess what, it quit raining, so they will probably need reseeding in September.

Remember progress sometimes is messy. I think we only have three blocks in town now that are still old, the rest have been replaced with plastic.

Well attempt number 3 on the merry-go-round in the park was met with another setback. I would explain but it would take too long. Suffice it to say we are waiting for replacement parts again.

The next big project is the disinfection system at the sewer plant. We were planning on this project to be a little over $400,000, but the first cost estimate was over $700,000, so we are checking on areas and companies that would make this project more to our liking. I’m thinking you will hear more about this later. It seems whenever contractors do a project for cities and schools, the cost doubles.

The Legion is starting their tenderloin and chicken sandwiches again on the third Monday of the month. The September meal is going to be a whole hog roast, so come out and support them. We have had one person take out papers to run for the council, I think we need a couple more, so do your civic duty and get involved.

Also the Mayor’s position is up for reelection. I am planning to run again, but everyone is welcome to run, just see Linda about getting papers.

This months quote is from Aristotle! “There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing and be nothing.”

Thanks and have a great rest of the month as well as Labor Day. Your Mayor Marty
