Greetings Van Horne Area Residents!

Fall is fast approaching and the leaves are starting to fall. Remember we do allow you to burn your leaves but with a few rules. No burning on the asphalt portion of the street and no burning until after 4 p.m. Also only leaf burning is allowed no other items. Also be courteous of your neighbors.
As was previously discussed the east side water main and looping project has been completed. We have had several complaints from residents along the street. Sometimes change can be difficult and I understand that. This project is meant to improve your water quality by removing (75 year old ?) rusted water mains and replacing them with new plastic that will not rust.
Also in the event of a fire (heaven forbid) we upped the water available to fight a fire by 50%. I think the advantages outweigh the weeds, slow emerging grass and rock in driveways that have now been replaced with asphalt. I understand it took longer than what we expected because of all the spring rain.
I looked at everything over the weekend and the grass is coming weeds have been knocked down and driveways look good. We will spray for weeds after the grass has been mowed a couple times, it cannot be done sooner because it can kill the grass. We have contacted Alliant several times about getting the street light pole back up, so far to no avail, but we will keep trying.
Also while discussing this project I need to thank Jared for being a diligent observer and keeping track of everything that was done and used on the project. He saved the city a lot of money which we will put toward street repairs next summer, when we also finish the streets in this project. Enough about that.
A few upcoming dates: The Lions breakfast at the community room September 22nd. Homecoming September 27th. Legion sandwiches on October 21st. Elections on November 5th.
Merry-go-round update. The merry-go round has been completed and one layer of fall protection installed. Rain forced us to cancel the second layer but hopefully by the time you read this we will have it completed. A long drawn-out project but it will be worth it as a great Memorial for Sally. Thank you Ron.
A few safety items. The council voted to get a radar speed sign that will be installed on a trailer that we can move around town. No, it is not going to allow us to ticket you for speeding, but speeds and time of day will be recorded so that we can share the information with our police protection so they know where and when the problems are. I guess my thought is to slow down to the speed limit for safety anyway.
Also keep in mind that harvest will be happening, and there will be a lot of slow moving traffic around and an increase in semi traffic in town as well as in the country. One piece of advice — When a semi is in the left lane with its right blinker on do not try to pass on the right, they can’t see you and you will get run over. I see it all too often.
We awarded the design phase for the sewer plant and also the design phase for the overlay project on 1st street from the Depot up to the school. Jared and Linda applied for a grant for the street overlay project, and found out that we received it. Hopefully that project will be next summer. More on the sewer upgrade at a later date.
Congratulations to the Benton fall sports programs looks like all are doing well.
Your thought for the month: Most of the problems in life are because of two reasons: we act without thinking or we keep thinking without acting.
Have a great rest of the month. Your Mayor Marty.
