A strong first quarter helped Belle Plaine (13-9) to a 62-51 win on Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, at North English, in Class 1A boys’ basketball action against English Valleys (12-10).

The Plainsmen were led by junior Ben DeMeulenaere, who scored 26 points. Junior Eli Ehlen scored 23, and was 5 of 5 for three-pointers. Ben DeMeulenaere had 15 rebounds. Senior Jackson Tegeler had 14. With four assists each were Ehlen and sophomore Brooks DeMeulenaere.

The team was 20 of 42 for field goals, 5 of 14 for three-pointers and 17 of 28 for free throws. The team had 40 rebounds, five steals and 11 turnovers. English Valleys was 21 of 59 for field goals, 2 of 22 for three-pointers, and 7 of 12 for free throws. The team had 26 rebounds, eight steals and six turnovers. Kaden Hall led EV with 25. Hayden Irmen added 11.

Belle Plaine plays Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Alburnett (12-10) in the second round of the substate 5 tournament.
