Assumption passed for 70 yards and ran for 162 yards.
Co-head coach Jeff Zittergruen commented, ” Our guys did a great job executing against Assumption, both offensively and defensively. We knew the game was going to be a physical grind and our guys never flinched throughout the whole night. Our line did a great job of opening up some running lanes and Jacob Brecht ran the ball extremely hard. In the passing game, we were able to take advantage of some big plays in play action. Defensively we were very opportunistic in creating turnovers. When we have been successful this year, usually it is because we have won the turnover battle.
“Next week’s game at Maquoketa will be another test because they are the first team we really have played this year that is really a pass-heavy offense. We will have to make some adjustments defensively to make sure we are able to protect against the pass. And then like any time you go on the road, we need to be workman-like offensively and take care of the football.”
Benton is now ranked 12th in the MaxPreps 3A rankings.
Benton (6-1) travels to Maquoketa (0-7) on Friday, Oct. 15. The regular season ends Oct. 22, after Benton hosts No. 21 Central DeWitt (5-2).
