Van Horne Newsletter – June 2023

June 2023

Summer officially arrives in about a week, but with the dry weather and the sounds of baseball and softball in town, it feels like it’s been here for a few weeks. Don’t forget to keep those thirsty new trees watered.

Thanks to the efforts and funding of our hard-working Lions Club, it looks like Pickle Ball is on its way to Van Horne. The City Council gave its approval to lay out a court, using one of the existing basketball courts in Marty Junge Park. Stay tuned!

Now that the problem trees have been removed from the right-of-ways, it’s becoming more obvious that many dead and dying ones remain on private property which poses a danger to people and property below. If this pertains to you, please have these limbs and trees removed. There are plenty of capable tree removal companies in the area.

Don’t forget this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, dumpsters will be at the City Works Building on 1st Ave. It’s always a great feeling to get rid of unwanted items – and to keep Van Horne beautiful. Be sure to reward your efforts by coming downtown that evening for food, drink, & music at the Street Dance.

Lastly, the Legion will be hosting a flag-burning ceremony again this year at Marty Junge Park on Monday the 19th at 6:00. Free brats, hot dogs and dessert will be provided. See you there!

Mowing Season has begun again. The city has been asked to ask residents if they could refrain from blowing grass clippings onto the alley and roadways when mowing. This is a HUGE hazard for bikes and motorcycles. Also, please keep yards mowed and weeds under control.

Van Horne 2022 WATER QUALITY REPORT: Will not be mailed this year. Copies are available at City Hall or on the city website.

MOSQUITO SPRAYING: The City of Van Horne is planning to spray for mosquitoes again this summer. State certified pesticide applicators will spray an ultra low volume non thermal aerosol (cold fog) to control adult mosquitoes in residential and recreational areas and other non-cropland areas where these insects are a problem. The City will use BIOMIST 1.5 + 7.5 ULV. Best results are achieved when the temperatures are cooler and the wind speed is below 10 mph. The city plans to spray on Thursday evenings or early mornings. If unable to fog on designated day, Tuesdays will be alternate days. No special precautions are necessary for residents normally, but you may call City Hall at 319-228-8238 for more information.

PUBLIC SWIM BUS: Will be running once again on Wednesdays in July (on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th). Children must be at least 7 years old and if you ride the bus to Belle Plaine you must ride the bus home. If the pool is experiencing bad weather the bus will not pick children up. Bus will pick children up 12:25 (no later so be a little early) at the Van Horne Elementary. The bus will leave Belle Plaine at 4:15 for the return ride. If you have any questions please contact Lance Hinschberger at 319-444-2200.
