Benton (25-9) won the first game of a doubleheader against CPU (15-14). Statistics are coming. Benton had six hits. Wyatt Rinderknecht was 2 for 4. Cody Wright had one RBI. Cael Kaestner was 2 for 2 with one RBI. The team had two errors. Jordan Thys threw for seven innings, allowed three hits, one earned run, walked no one and struck out nine. He hit one batter.

Benton lost the second game of the doubleheader. Benton had seven hits. Rinderknecht was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Evan Daugherty had two RBIs. Cody Wright was 2 for 3. Thomas Lampkin had one RBI. Benton had one error. Drew Fillenworth threw for four innings, allowed three hits, no runs, walked one and struck out six. Lane Kaestner threw for 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed two hits, six earned runs, walked five, hit one batter and struck out two. Ryan Finn threw for 1 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, five runs (four earned), hit one batter and struck out one.

Benton travels to No. 8 Davenport Assumption (21-12) on Monday, July 3, at 5 p.m. Benton hosts Fort Madison (10-17) on Friday, July 7, in the first round of Class 3A Region 5 baseball tourney action. The winner plays the winner of the Xavier vs. Keokuk game on Monday, July 11. the substate final is Wednesday, July 12. Also in the substate are No. 4 Marion, South Tama, Mount Pleasant and Fairfield.

Layna DeMoss had a home run and two RBIs. The team had one error. Jessa DeMoss threw for seven innings, allowed five hits, three runs, walked two, hit one batter and struck out one.

Benton edged CPU in the second game by one run. Benton had 18 hits. Emma Townsley was 2 for 5. Hope Moore was 3 for 4 with a double. Ana Glawe was 2 or 3 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Jessa DeMoss was 2 for 5. Hannah Greiner was 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs. Layna DeMoss was 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. Fionna McCleod was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Jaida Lyons was 2 for 3. Hope Moore stole two bases. The team had two errors. Haiden Moore threw for 4 1/3 innings, allowed six hits, five runs (one earned), walked three, hit one batter and struck out three. Hope Moore threw for one out, allowed three hits, five runs and walked one. Jessa DeMoss threw for one out. Paige Meyer threw for two innings, allowed four hits, four earned runs and walked three. Meyer picked up the win.

Benton beat North Scott (20-9) in the first game at Iowa City in eight innings. Benton had another big game game at the plate with 12 hits. Townsley was 2 for 4. Hope Moore was 2 for 2. Glawe was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Layna DeMoss was 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Hope Moore stole two bases. Benton had two errors. Jessa DeMoss threw for eight innings, allowed 11 hits, four runs (two earned), walked one and struck out two.

Benton lost at the Rick Doran Classic, Iowa City, to Muscatine (24-5). Benton had nine hits. Townsley was 3 for 3. Hope Moore had one RBI. Glawe had two RBIs. Layna DeMoss was 2 for 2 with two RBIs. Jaida Lyons was 2 for 3 with one RBI. The team had one error. Hope Moore threw for two innings, allowed two hits, one run, walked two and struck out one. Jess DeMoss took the loss, threw for two innings, allowed two hits, four runs, walked two and struck out three. Haiden Moore threw for one inning, allowed two hits, three earned runs, walked one, hit one batter and struck out one.

No. 11 Benton (25-14) hosts Oelwein (12-15) on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. for the Class 3A Region 6 quarterfinal. TICKETS. The winner faces Sumner-Fredericksburg (25-6) or New Hampton (11-11) on Saturday, July 8 at Benton Community. The final is Monday, July 11 at 7 p.m. Also in the region are No. 3 Mount Vernon (25-10), Vinton-Shellsburg (9-24), Center Point-Urbana (18-17) and Mid-Prairie (16-20).
