August 2023

You might have noticed the new addition to Marty Junge Memorial Park – the Little Free Library – a place to leave or pick up a book or two. Thanks to the Library Board for taking on this project, to the Lamberts for building it, to Jared and Mike for installing it, and to Stacie Gorkow for adding the artistic touches. This is yet another park project recommended to the city council by now 7th grader Kaidee Tungesvik.

Thanks to the Lions Club, the pickle ball court is completed and getting plenty of use. Stacie and I have yet to be challenged to a doubles match, but we’re waiting…

As it’s obvious to everyone in Iowa, election season is almost upon us. There are two council seats and the mayor on the ballot in Van Horne this year. Anyone interested in running can find nomination papers at city hall, which are due by 5 p.m. on September 21st.

This Saturday morning the 19th, the Keystone Tractorcade will be rolling through. It’ll leave Keystone at 10 a.m., come into town from the west, go north for a block on Main St., then head east on 2nd Ave and back to the highway on 1st St. I know they’d love to see their Van Horne friends along the route.

Also this Saturday is the annual Van Horne Fire Department Steak & Pork Chop dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. I hope you’ll consider supporting the fire fighters – and enjoying a great meal.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the Sons of the Legion Sandwich Supper returning on Monday, September 18 from 5:30 to 7:00. — Mayor Pat Gorkow
