Need for security is questioned for county facilities

VINTON – A Benton County citizen questioned the need for security at the courthouse and other offices at the Benton County Board of Supervisors’ meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the service center in Vinton.

Jerry Greif discussed courthouse and service center security. He questioned why security was needed. Sheriff Ron Tippett explained the courthouse restricts weapons, and buildings that restrict weapons need security, according to state law. Benton County has chosen to protect not just the court area, but also all of the employees in the courthouse. “Unfortunately it is the times we’re living in,” Tippett oberved.

Greif asked, “So what’s the threat?” Tippett answered, “The threat is what you don’t know.”

Greif concluded, “I think just this is extreme, to spend this kinds of money on something I don’t believe is needed.”

Greif said there are only four other counties that have security to get to the treasurer’s or auditor’s office. Tippett explained this is due to the design of the building. Greif suggested that it be put to a vote to the taxpayers. Greif also suggested having security only for the court room. “I think it’s a waste of money,” Greif told the board. The auditor sent a copy of the security ordinance to Greif.
