EV HISTORY CENTER – JUNE

Coming to the EV History Center: English River Decoy Works

Frank Mertz taught mathematics at English Valleys Jr/Sr High School for many years, and he taught at Kirkwood Community College after his retirement at EV.

In 1996, Frank was helping set up for a Ducks Unlimited Banquet, and a locally-carved decoy appeared. He inquired and was told it was donated by a local carver who was giving classes at Amana. He went to observe, and the carver (tongue-in-cheek) said Frank could not watch but had to carve!

Before that, Frank had been doing woodcraft shows, but his focus was changed. He now carves wildlife (birds, animals, reptiles). Depending upon the size and painting required, carvings can take from 5-100+ hours from start to finish.

On Sunday, June 30, at 2:00 p. m., Frank Mertz will be discussing his enterprise, The English River Decoy Works. Along with his program, he will also be displaying many fine examples of his work.

The English Valleys History Center is pleased to provide a time for Frank to discuss and display his works for everyone to see. All are invited to attend this event at no charge. Donations are accepted.
