At the meeting on Jan. 27, they dealt with these items.

  • Flood insurance renewals. This item was tabled.
  • Budget request for Kirkwood Workplace Learning Center. They work with sixth to 12th grade students to help in choosing careers. They have job shadows and job fairs. $2,575 was requested, which is on a per capita basis.
  • IT (Information Technology) update for the sheriff’s office. IT official Ben Turnis explained the server situation. 
  • A tax abatement was approved for a parcel in Belle Plaine.
  • A closed session was held with Julia Biery of human resources. Afterwards, no action was taken.
  • Budget work focused on the levy for libraries, communication towers, outside legal and consultation fees, HACAP, historical preservation, housing trust fund, meeting with department heads, building funds, courthouse grounds and maintenance, Cedar Valley Ranch and mental health.

Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025 in Vinton

The Benton County Compensation Board gave its salary recommendations for elected officials at their meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at the service center in Vinton.

The board recommenced a dollar amount for increases, as opposed to a percentage. They also discussed basing increases on a merit system, as well as how deputies in the respective offices are paid. The deputy gets 85 percent of their elected official. The compensation board also looked how officials are paid in comparison to other counties. 

The recommendation called for no increase for the supervisors at the supervisors’ request, $3,000 for the auditor, $2,800 for treasurer and recorder, $4,000 for sheriff, and $6,000 for attorney.
