Note from new Benton Community High School Principal

Bobcat Country!

I am honored and truly excited to join the Benton Community School District and become a part of the proud tradition that defines Bobcat Country. As I begin this new journey, I want to express my gratitude to the central office staff, building administrators, faculty, and community members for the warm welcome I have received. Your support has made this transition incredibly positive, and I am eager to serve such a dedicated and passionate district.

This marks my 27th year in education. My journey includes 9 years as a middle school math teacher and 17 years as a high school principal. Throughout my career, my focus has always been on fostering student success, building strong relationships, and supporting the work of our educators.

As I take the torch forward here at Benton Community, I do so with deep respect for the values, culture, and excellence that define this district. I was drawn to Benton Community because of its strong academic reputation, innovative spirit, and commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all learners. These attributes align closely with my own leadership philosophy and values.

My educational philosophy is built on several key beliefs:

  1. Student-Centered Learning – Every student deserves an equitable and personalized learning experience that celebrates their strengths and supports their unique growth.
  2. Collaboration – When students, educators, families, and community members work together, we foster creativity, critical thinking, and a collective investment in our schools.
  3. Building Relationships – Trust and empathy are the cornerstones of a thriving educational environment. I prioritize meaningful relationships that help students feel seen, heard, and empowered.
  4. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) – True education nurtures both the heart and the mind. I am committed to supporting students’ emotional well-being, helping them grow into compassionate and engaged citizens.

As a leader, I strive to be collaborative, supportive, data-driven, communicative, and visionary. You will find me visible and engaged throughout the district—visiting classrooms, listening to students, supporting staff, and ensuring we are using data and feedback to continually grow. I am committed to transparent and consistent communication and will always keep an open door for students, staff, families, and community members.

In addition to academic achievement, I believe student success includes growth in character, social-emotional skills, and involvement in their school and community. At Benton, we will celebrate the whole student.

On a personal note, I have been married for 25 years to my wife Jessica, who serves as a HR Director at Collins Aerospace. We are proud parents to Parker (20), a sophomore in the University of Iowa REACH program, Payton (18), a recent graduate who will play soccer at Grand View University this fall, and Porter (13), 8th grader who is active in both athletics and the arts. I cherish my time with my family and enjoy golfing, watching sporting events, and cheering on my kids in their many activities.

As I step into this role, I carry this quote by Dr. Brad Johnson close to heart:

“When we focus on weaknesses, we create fear. When we focus on strengths, we create confidence.”

At Benton Community, we will focus on strengths—of our students, our staff, and our community—and together, we will build something extraordinary.

Thank you for welcoming me into Bobcat Country. I look forward to partnering with all of you to continue Benton’s proud legacy while also embracing the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
