Frank McCaw was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High and the University of Dubuque where he majored in history and social studies. He worked as a social studies teacher at Hempstead Senior High School in Dubuque and a freshman football coach for seven years.

Frank writes, “My wife claims I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, and that was confirmed by a varied employment career. In addition to a teaching certificate, I also hold real estate and insurance licenses. I began a career installing medical group information systems at clinics and HMOs throughout the country, an opportunity that exposed me to many different cultural and geographic aspects of our country. I then transitioned to medical group management with experience in family practice, ophthalmology and residency clinics in Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota.

“I later worked as a contract accountant, performing work for both large and small businesses. For five years my wife, Anne, and I owned and operated a bed and breakfast in Galena, Illinois. It was a lot of work and a very educational experience.”

Frank’s interest in the Civil War started when his grandmother gave him a book on the Civil War for Christmas when he was eleven years old. He was hooked and has been a student of that important event ever since. He has read hundreds of books, spent countless hours in research, and visited Civil War sites all over the country, while discovering that the more he learns the more there is to know.

On Sunday, November 16, Frank McCaw will be discussing Iowa men who served as Union Army Generals during the Civil War.
