Benton supervisors heard about budgets, approve EMS claims

VINTON – The Benton County Board of Supervisors EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Trust Fund claims were approved at their meeting Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, at the service center in Vinton. Claims were read by Supervisor Ron Tippett. 

LOSST for uniforms in Van Horne

The board also approved Resolution No. 25-99 LOSST (Local Sales and Service Tax)  funds gift for the Van Horne Fire Department. This is for 10 new uniforms for the fire department. The total is $35,828.27. The county pays for 10 percent of this.

Veterans Affairs and General Assistance Budget

Courtney Long of Veterans Affairs and General Assistance met with the board regarding the 2027 budget. The only change in veterans affairs is a raise of 3 percent for cost of living and salary-related benefits. All other expenses remain the same, she said. Long’s salary is 75 percent for veterans affairs and 25 percent for general assistance. 

Land use change

A land use change hearing was held for Matt and Michelle Friedman, for land in Parcel A, Section 17, Iowa Township. This is for a single family residence north of Belle Plaine. It was approved by the board. 

Behavioral Health Service

Sarah Berndt, District 6 Leader Iowa (PCA) gave a Behavioral Health Services overview.  

Workplace Learning

Kristine Bullock, Kirkwood Workplace Learning Connection, presented their FY 27 budget request. They help schools and businesses with job shadowing and internships. The county’s contribution is based on the 2020 census. The contribution request is $2,0575.50.

Closed session

Assistant County Attorney Derek Marsh met in closed session per Iowa Code 21.5(1)c: to discuss strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent where its disclosure would be likely to prejudice or disadvantage the position of the governmental body in that litigation.
