VINTON – Work on the 2026-27 budget continued for Benton County as the board of supervisors met on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, in Vinton.
Sheriff Dave Upah and Deputy Josh Karsten met with the board about hiring a full-time worker in the civil division. The worker is replacing someone who is retiring.
The board also looked over the sheriff’s budget for the next fiscal year. The budget is going up about $500,000 and they plan to bring in about $1 million. They are looking at increasing the room and board for federal prisoners. It is now $50 per night. They are negotiating for $75 and $90. The number of prisoners will increase from 10 to 20.
Union employees are getting a 4 percent increase in wages.
Health, dental and vision insurance rates were discussed for the county for FY 2027.
The board looked at the budgets for land use, health department, public health and transportation.
Pam Keel of Virginia Gay Hospital was appointed to the board of health. She replaces Karl Holmes.
An exempt session was held with Assistant County Attorney Derek Marsh. He also talked about posting a public notice for sealed bids for the sale of real estate in Benton County. This is the old animal shelter.
The board accepted the resignation of Rodney Clark, part-time transportation driver.
Richard Lloyd was appointed as a medical examiner investigator.
The board talked about maintenance for the Benton County Jail.
