CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (April 6, 2026)–Kirkwood Community College’s Exercise Science program is expanding opportunities for students by adding the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) credential to its curriculum, allowing students to graduate with both a degree and a nationally recognized certification.
The NASM Certified Personal Trainer credential is considered one of the most respected qualifications in the fitness field. Through the program, students gain evidence-based knowledge and hands-on experience to create personalized training plans and effectively guide clients. Recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), this certification enhances graduates’ professional credibility, making them more attractive to employers and positioning them for stronger earning potential.
Kirkwood’s Exercise Science program prepares students to help individuals live healthier lives through exercise, rehabilitation and nutrition, while studying the science of human movement and wellness. With the addition of the NASM credential, students will gain a competitive edge as they pursue careers or continue their education.
“We are excited to give our students the opportunity to earn the NASM Certified Personal Trainer credential while they are completing their degree at Kirkwood,” said Kirkwood Professor of Exercise Science Denise Glew. “This allows them to graduate not only with academic knowledge, but also with a nationally recognized certification that prepares them for real careers in the fitness and wellness industry. It strengthens their confidence, hands-on skills and professional opportunities. Our goal is to help students leave Kirkwood truly career-ready.”
Students in the program learn to apply principles of anatomy and physiology, conduct fitness assessments, design individualized exercise programs, and evaluate best practices in wellness. They also develop communication strategies to help individuals and groups modify health behaviors while demonstrating ethical and professional standards.
Graduates are prepared for careers in fitness centers, health clubs, physical therapy clinics and sports teams, or to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue advanced degrees.
