Greetings Van Horne area residents!
Well I was hoping that during the last month that this coronavirus thing would be behind us. I guess I was wrong on that point.
We are seeing somethings reopen, which I think is good, and with social distancing and masks I think we can begin to return to normal. I think Van Horne residents as well as Benton County residents as a whole have done an excellent job of doing the things that prevent the spread. I am not going to list the things to prevent the spread. You have seen them all too often. Keep doing what you have been doing, and we will get through this.
I want to join others and thank everyone that is out there everyday performing services for the essential businesses that need to remain open. I can’t list them all, but nurses, doctors and I guess anyone in the medical field come to mind. Thank you for all you do everyday. Employees in grocery stores, pharmacies convenience stores, retail and local and government offices. Thank you. And last but not least anyone in the agriculture businesses, truckers and especially our farmers.
Times are tough right now on whatever you are producing and not knowing what is going to happen down the road. Thank you. Also thanks to our first responders and our firemen. They do a great service and do it as volunteers. Thank you. I know there are a lot of other occupations that are still working also and I say thank you.
As you know the park dance has been called off, but as of now, the Sons of the Legion are hoping to start their sandwich suppers again in August.
Keep doing what you’re doing and we will get through this and be stronger together when able to reunite again.
The senior parents are planning a parade in town to help everyone cheer the seniors on as they embark on their new endeavors. The parade is scheduled for Sunday, May 24. Plans are still being formalized but it will start around 2 p.m. Line up for the seniors will be at O’Grady’s and will go north on first street then west on 3rd avenue. It will go by the little school, all three churches and three sides of the park. Check social media for final time and route. Congratulations Seniors.
Street repairs should be starting soon in town. As I type this all parks and playgrounds are still closed. Keep buying local and using the restaurants as much as you can. Just a reminder have you submitted your census, if not git it done. Your thought for the month.
From an unknown: “You can’t fall if you don’t climb. But there’s no joy in living your whole life on the ground.” Stay safe and have a great rest of the month. Your Mayor Marty

RELAY FOR LIFE: Due to Covid-19 the American Cancer Society Benton County for Life will NOT take place on Friday, May 29. Instead we encourage everyone to observe Shelter-In-Relay for Life on Survivors Day, June 7, 2020. Consider doing any of the following.
- Celebrate with a survivor with a phone call or safe distance walk.
- Remember a loved one lost to cancer with a candle or luminaria in your driveway.
- Fight Back by donating money, which is the ammunition for our battle with Cancer.
Cancer has not taken a break during this pandemic. Donations may be sent to Chelsea Savings Bank, PO Box 67, Van Horne Iowa 52346. You may designate for your team a luminaria, sponsorship, or a donation. Be safe, be smart, be generous, and we will win both of these wars. Thank you, ACS Benton County Board.
VAN HORNE REC – We have had a few questions about our plan for summer ball this year. At this time we are planning to have a summer ball season. Our regular season does not start until after Memorial Day and the pre-season tournament takes place in mid-May. Hopefully, we are all able to get out and play by then. We will follow the league for recommendations as we get closer to the beginning of the season. If you haven’t yet signed your child(ren) up for summer ball, please do so ASAP at www.tinyurl.com/vhrec20 You will receive a confirmation email with your amount owed. Please don’t worry about paying fees until we get closer to the start date. At this point, we just need numbers so we can form teams and merge with other teams as needed.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need anything during this time.
