Benton Community opened its 2020 season on the road, but in a home game, defeating Vinton-Shellsburg, 28-21. It was scheduled as a home game, but due to the damage to Benton’s home field, there will be no home games in Van Horne.
Colin Buch was 8 of 13 in passing for one touchdown and 84 yards. Benton rushed for 178 yards. Buch had 12 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown. Lawrence Wallace had 18 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Landen Schmuecker had two catches for 25 yards. Jacob Brecht had 5 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Cretin had on catch for five yards.
Cade Timmerman had 8.5 total tackles. Jacob Brecht had 8. Austin Roos had 1.5 sacks. Jaxson Snitker had 1 sack.
Timmerman had one interception with a 4-yard return. Brecht had a pick with a 9-yard return.
Sam Wallace had two kickoff returns for 94 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown run. Brecht had one return for 54 yards. Luis Hernandez had three kickoffs for 135 yards. Nathan Rottman kicked twice for 57 yards. Buch punted once for 46 yards.
Vinton-Shellsburg had 117 yards passing and 224 yards rushing. Brooks Erickson was 15 of 22 for passing. He ran for 115 yards. CJ Rickels had five catches for 118 yards.
