BP volleyball girls win conference title; BC gets win over CPU

Belle Plaine hosted the championship round of the South Iowa Cedar League tournament, Thursday, Oct. 15, defeating Colfax-Mingo and Montezuma to claim the conference title.

Mandy Chizek had 31 assists in the 3-0 win over Colfax-Mingo. The team was 35 of 76 for kills with six errors. Alyssa Tegeler had 15 kills. Nicholaa Phillippe added 12. Jacy Gates had four. Phillippe had 14 digs. Adding nine was Jacey Reineke. Kieran Holberg had seven. Tegeler had four blocks. Phillippe had three. The team was 65 of 73 in serves with 14 aces. Holmberg was 5 of 8 with one ace. Tegeler was 8 of 9 with two aces. Chizek was 9 of 9 with two aces. Phillippe was 12 of 13 with two aces. Grace Bean was 13 of 15 with two aces. Reineke was 18 of 19 with five aces.

It took four games to defeat Montezuma in the conference title game, as Belle Plaine won, 3-1. Mandy Chiek had 45 assists. Belle Plaine was 56 of 119 in kills with 10 errors. Jacy Gates had six blocks. Tegeler had five. Phillippe had three. Phillippe had 13 digs. Holmberg and Reineke had 11 each. Tegeler had eight. The team was 86 of 93 for serves with 10 aces. Holberg was 14 of 15 with three aces. Tegeler was 24 of 25 with three aces. Chizek was 10 of 11. Phillippe was 10 of 11 with two aces. Bean was 16 of 18. Reineke was 10 of 11 with one ace. Gates was 2 of 2 with one ace.

Coach April Kressley’s comments: I am super proud of the effort this entire team has put in this season. It has been a very strange year, and they have just rolled with everything thrown at them. Last night was great competition for our ladies going into regional play. They all stepped up and did their jobs, to go ahead and win the 2020 SICL Championship!

Belle Plaine hosts Meskwaki Settlement (0-17) Monday, Oct. 19, at Belle Plaine, as tournament play begins. Belle Plaine is in Region 17 for Class 1A. The next round is Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in Belle Plaine, as the winner takes on the winner of the Central City (12-11) vs. Cedar Valley Christian (3-14) game. Belle Plaine also hosts the next round, Monday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. In the bottom of the bracket with Belle Plaine are Montezuma (12-6), Iowa Valley (6-18), HLV (12-9) and BGM (4-15). The regional final is Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m.

WaMaC Tournament

Benton Community lost to Vinton-Shellsburg at the WaMaC Tournament held Thursday, Oct. 15, in Williamsburg. The team was 16 of 71 in kills with 13 errors. Grace Embretson had eight kills. Kiah Coffin had six assists. The team two service aces, with aces from Emma Townsley and Addison Phillips. Embretson had eight digs.

The Lady Bobcats also lost 2-0 to host Williamsburg. Benton was 11 of 67 in kills with nine errors. Embretson had six kills. Coffin had six assists. The team had one ace in serving, that coming from Coffin. Embretson had six digs.

Benton defeated Center Point-Urbana, 2-1, at the tournament. The team was 25 of 78 in kills with 12 errors, led by Embretson with 11 kills. Coffin had 11 assists. Embretson added 10. The team had four aces, as Phillips had three and Caitlin Keiper had one. Olivia Janss had 10 digs.

4A Region 7 tourney play starts next week. Benton (9-12) hosts Washington (3-19) Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Van Horne. The match starts at 7 p.m. The winner goes on to play No. 5 Western Dubuque (22-10) on Thursday, Oct, 22, at Western Dubuque. The regional final is Tuesday, Oct. 27, at a site to be determined.
