SOUR GRAPES: Isolation log, third week of November, 2020

By Jim Magdefrau

Monday, Nov. 16, 2020 – Shuttered my summer lakeside cottage for the season. Translation: Moved the bicycle, chairs and tables from my garage to the basement. Flu shot! Before giving the shot, Beth checked my arm and said she didn’t want to hit any muscle. I assured she’d find no muscles in my arms. TV – British mysteries. The shows made me look up how to make a proper cup of tea. As well as G&T. My favorites are “Death In Paradise” and “Midsomer Murders.” They look like great places to live. Except for all of those murders. Friends’ online concert has me doing a deep dive on Mahalia Jackson gospel tunes. “On My Way.” I hope to work that into the nursing home tour. When that happens.

Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020 – Squirrel made it from crabapple tree to pine tree in the back yard. Very proud of my squirrels. Biked in the basement while watching hit Latino music videos. Kept running into furniture. The car is officially in the garage. Looking forward to our first day in spring. The summer cottage is looking forward to opening for a great summer social season. I’m watching the numbers climb. I’m posting each day at 8:30 a.m. on local updates. People ask where I get the numbers. They are from the state. And then I use math. MATH! That’s not what I went into journalism for. Since it looks like we’ll be celebrating Christmas in July, online friends are pointing towards Belle Plaine’s July 4 celebration to mash our holidays into one event. There was concern that the derecho had knocked down the party tree in the park. Colleagues confirmed it is still standing. So it’s “Go Dog Go” party time. I do like your party hat.

Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2020 – Wrote the supervisors story. Biked in the basement. Walked uptown to get the mail. Figuring out the opening riff on “Last Time” by the Rolling Stones. Continued reading Keith Richards autobiography.

Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020 – Biked in the basement. Walked uptown to get the mail. By special request, I took pictures at the funeral for a WWII veteran at cemetery near Newhall. It was a great turnout by the local Legion posts.

Friday, Nov. 20, 2020 – Biked in the basement. Walked uptown to get the mail. Finished the column. Make plans for the weekend and next week. Which is pretty much biking in the basement and walking uptown to get the mail.

I hope your week is going well. Stay healthy and take care.

  1. Love the column. And the covid updates. Keeps me informed but not overwhelmed or confused. Also you listed two of my favorite British TV series. Binged watched and done. Missing them greatly. Sent from my U.S.Cellular© Smartphone
