Belle Plaine’s boys’ basketball team opened its 2020-21 season with a non-conference loss on the road, 74-45, to Vinton-Shellsburg. Ben DeMeulenaere led Belle Plaine with 20 points. He also had 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. Jaxon Kressley had 4 assists. The team had 28 rebounds and 29 turnovers. They were 17 of 38 for field goals, 4 of 10 for three-pointes and 7 of 18 for free throws. The Vikings were 32 of 65 for field goals, 4 of 18 for three-pointers and 6 of 14 for free throws. Vinton had 35 rebounds.

Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Marengo

Conference action started Tuesday, Dec. 1, with a 68-40 loss to Iowa Valley in Marengo.

Iowa Valley was 26 of 47 from the field and 6 of 17 for three-pointers. They were 10 of 13 from the line. The team had 20 rebounds. Iowa Valley was led by Brody Ward with 38 points.

Belle Plaine was 15 of 42 from the field, 1 of 12 for three-pointers and 9 of 19 from the line. The team had 30 rebounds and 25 turnovers. Ben DeMeulenaere scored 17 for Belle Plaine, including 5 of 8 shooting for three-pointers. With two assists each were Jaxson Kressley and Jackson Tegeler. DeMeulenaere had 12 rebounds. He also blocked two shots.

Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at Belle Plaine

Belle Plaine (0-3) lost in their home opener, Friday, Dec. 4, to SICL rival Keota (2-0) , 63-30. Ben DeMeulenaere led Belle Plaine with 9 points and 15 rebounds. Jaxon Kressley had three assists. DeMeulenaere also had two steals. The team was 12 of 40 for field goals, 4 of 18 for three-pointers and 2 of 8 for free throws. They had 33 rebounds and 17 turnovers.

Luke Hammen and Carson Sprouse had 19 points each for Keota. They were 23 of 53 from the field, 13 of 33 for three-pointers and 4 of 5 for free throws. Keota had 27 rebounds and six turnovers.

The Belle Plaine girls’ basketball team traveled to Marengo on Tuesday, Dec. 1, to start their season, losing to Iowa Valley, 53-42.

Belle Plaine was 17 of 40 from the field, 2 of 10 for three-pointers and 6 of 11 from the line. The team had 26 rebounds and 28 turnovers.

With 12 points each were Jacy Gates and Alyssa Tegeler. Jacey Reineke had 7 rebounds. Tegeler had 6. Tegeler also blocked three shots. Olivia Bohlen blocked two.

Cassity Havens led Iowa Valley with 23 points. Amelia Frimml added 12.

Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at Belle Plaine

Belle Plaine had a home SICL game Friday, Dec. 4, as the girls’ basketball team topped Keota, 54-47.

Bree Shaull had 16 for Belle Plaine. Alyssa Tegeler added 16 and Jacy Gates had 10 points. Tegeler also had 10 rebounds and three blocks. With four assists each were Jenna Fry and Jacey Reineke. The team was 24 of 53 for field goals, 5 of 12 for three-pointers, including 5 of 10 shooing by Shaull. Belle Plaine was 1 of 3 for free throws. The team had 31 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
