Greetings Van Horne Area Residents!
I will not discuss the weather, although last year was the same as this year and as soon as I mentioned it, it turned and we had a nasty rest of the winter, so I’m not going to discuss it.
There is not much going on in town or surrounding areas as residents are doing a good job of masking and social distancing, and our numbers indicate that by receding. Hopefully by the time you get this all of health care providers and nursing homes have received the vaccine. I think the next group is over 75 then older, then 65 and then down the line.
As 2021 begins, we are filled with hope but also a little anxiety for what the year will bring. As we delve into 2021 it is time to thank some people that make the city go in 2020. First our city employees, Linda, Jared and Mike for all the issues that arise daily while still performing their normal duties. Mechelle, Joan and the great Library Board Members, for keeping things going at the Library during the pandemic and derecho. Kathy for keeping all of our facilities clean. The First Responders for their dedication and taking their own time to respond to 69 calls last year. The Fire Department for keeping their equipment top notch, they have just put a new grass fighting unit in use and also for their time in responding to 42 calls. The Recreation Board and all that help with the summer programs, an especially trying year. The Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the Legion. The Floralia Arrangers. The Lions Club. The Van Horne Business Group. The Special Events Committee and of course the three churches in town.
I also feel we have a great council that cares about the citizens and is also forward thinking. I want to thank each and everyone of you for all you do for our community. As you can see it takes a lot of effort by all these people in town to make a community operate. Thank you. If you don’t belong to an organization, I think most are looking for new members most of the time. Get involved.
I need to thank all the people who helped after the storm in August, without your help I don’t think we would have been functioning nearly as fast, the people that cut branches, provided equipment and loaded branches, what a whirlwind of activity. Thank you. The outsiders that showed up with food, supplies and donations, the food trucks that showed up and delivered free meals, Fareway and Hy-Vee, for their donations.
And last but not least everyone one involved with our electricity, the truck drivers bringing the poles, the lineman, the foreman for lining everything up. Thank you.
To say 2020 was a stressful year is a given, but you know what we survived and maybe made our community a little stronger in the process. Thanks to all.
Your thought for the month from unknown, “Bad things happen, everyday to everyone. The difference is in how people deal with it.”
Thanks and have a great rest of the month. Your Mayor Marty.
Dates On Deck
February 15 Van Horne City Council meeting @ 6:30 p.m.
PET LICENSE: It is that time of year again, however there is an issue with shipping and tags have not arrived yet. So hopefully they will be here by the first of February and we can begin. Thanks for your patience.
FUTURE GREEN: Future Green is looking for new members to help get new trees planted in Van Horne. The last few years, the group has struggled to find places to plant trees and to get volunteer hours. Now that Derecho 2020 has provided many bare spots in town. We need new members to get Future Green active again. The goal is to meet quarterly, more if needed, and to once again qualify for Tree City USA and to apply for grants to plant trees. If you are interested in helping or donating, please contact Darcy (319-361-0290) or Lou (641-660-6188)..
