VINTON – Land use and law enforcement were on the agenda for the Benton County Board of Supervisors at their meeting on Tuesday, July 27, at the service center in Vinton.
A land use hearing was set for Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 9:15 a.m. for Matt Dulin for land in Section 22, Taylor Township.
A land hearing was held for Samuel Tiernan for land in Parcel B, Section 23, Florence Township. This is about one mile northwest of Walford. He plans a storage garage on the site. There was a concern about sight distance for the existing driveway, but traffic is light on the road. It has been used for storage for 31 years. This would bring the parcel into compliance, except for the driveway. Supervisor Richard Primmer also wanted to check with the county attorney on liability to the county. The matter was tabled. Supervisor Chairman Tracy Seeman said he’d also take a look at the site.
Steve Kromminga was appointed to the Benefited Fire District No. 2 Commission. He takes the place of Jeff Kromminga.
A utility permit was approved for Robert Ritscher in Kane Township.
The board discussed and approved a credit card and credit limit for the weed department. The limit is $2,500. The weed commissioner also discussed Canada Thistle control in the county, working to be more proactive than to work on a complaint basis.
In action for the sheriff’s department, Pam Lint was moved from part-time to full-time food service/custodial.
The board approved the law enforcement contract with the City of Urbana. This contract is for 2.5 hours a week. If additional hours are needed, the city will be billed at $35 per hour.
Sheriff Ron Tippett added that they are advertising for part-time courthouse security.
The board acknowledged the appointment of Mark Phippen by the county attorney for the civil service commission.
A lease with ECICOG was approved for the transportation building. County Attorney Dave Thompson explained the liability insurance on the building.
Justin Birker, maintenance assistant, met with the board regarding employee evaluation. Birker requested to meet in closed session. Seeman recommended Birker meet with the new department head, who was to start the next day.
