Van Horne Community Newsletter
Greetings Van Horne Area Residents!
Well our dry spell continues. Storms look imminent and then disappear before they get to us. They always say for the crops it always rains before it’s too late, well we are starting to test that. At least after this week the temperatures and humidity are supposed to drop.
On Tuesday the 10th the business group in town sponsored a “we beat the derecho” event at the newly built shelter house in the park. A good crowd was there and it was great to see so many young families with kids enjoying the evening. Food and drink were sponsored by the business group and although the event was supposed to be over at 7, I went home just before 9 there were probably 25 people still enjoying visiting with each other. That’s what makes small towns great.
Only thing I would ask is that all these young families to try to get involved in the community by either joining an organization or volunteering for some of the open positions on boards, like the tree group or rec. department. I know they are always looking for volunteers.
While discussing the park, due to the weather, the stump carver, Brian Parr, left before the event started, but he has an owl carved on the west side of the park, check it out.
When the weather cools off he will be back to do more. Thanks Brian for getting one done for the event. We also used this event as a fundraiser for the stump carving, we raised $1,160 during the event. Thanks to everyone that donated.
We also have a couple of people that are donating the cost of one whole stump. Thank you. If anyone else wants to donate, contact Linda or drop off donations at City Hall.
We have a few dates of happenings in town. School starts on August 23, please be careful driving as there will be more kids on the streets, as we are already seeing that with cross country kids. Also keep in mind there will be a whole new class that have received their drivers license so drive defensively.
On Monday August 16, the Sons of the Legion are beginning their tenderloin and chicken sandwich suppers.
The Fire Department is holding their annual pork chop or ribeye steak supper on Saturday, August 21 at the Fire Station.
Van Horne will again be hosting soccer in town beginning in September. Darcy and Linda have been working on grants for trees to be planted in town. We don’t know all details yet but hoping we can offer either two free or reduced cost trees to each household in town. More details to follow.
Ok I have decided that I am taking out papers to run for mayor again. With that said, I have received more complaints about loud explosions, drug activity, junk vehicles, abandoned houses, unkept yards, fire hazard businesses in the last two months than I have received in the whole 12 years or so that I have been mayor, (don’t really know how many years it has been for sure).
This is a warning. We are coming for you. Clean up your act or get out of town. Between the sheriff’s department, which I have been in touch more with in the last two months also, and the city ordinances and city lawyers we are going to clean up this town. I think everybody knows who I’m talking about and if they read this the offenders do too.
We have the sheriffs departments commitment and we as a city are going to clean this town up. If you see something or hear something don’t be afraid to call 911 and let the sheriff’s department know.
With Labor Day approaching and summer winding down our thoughts turn to fall. Remember as leaves fall please abide by city rules on burning them (after 4 p.m. and not on asphalt roadways) and also be courteous to your neighbors.
Again great to see such a crowd in the park.
Your thought for the month. “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” From Anne Frank.
I guess that goes for Van Horne also. Thanks and have a great rest of the month Your Mayor Marty.

FUTURE GREEN: Future Green is looking for new members to help get new trees planted in Van Horne. The last few years, the group has struggled to find places to plant trees and to get volunteer hours. Now that Derecho 2020 has provided many bare spots in town, we need new members to get Future Green active again. The goal is to meet quarterly, more if needed, and to once again qualify for Tree City USA and to apply for grants to plant trees. If you are interested in helping or donating, please contact Darcy (319-361-0290) or Lou (641-660-6188).
