Van Horne Newsletter – November 2021

Hello Van Horne Area Residents

My G’ma has always told me that we are given 10-top ten perfect weather days a year, and she has always encouraged me not to waste them. Sadly I think we have had our last Top Ten day for the year. I’m well aware that my personal standards highly influence the determination of “perfect weather” days and that standard might not match yours if you like winter. I am also not up for discussion on this matter! But just like anything worth having, there always comes a time  you have to let it go. This release of perfect weather days brings me to a reminder for all Van Horne residents. The town’s snow removal policy states that residents are responsible for clearing their sidewalks 48 hours after snowfall. If the forecasters are able to predict snowfall, it is always appreciated by our city workers to move your vehicle off the street. This allows them full access to clear the street in a timely and safe manner. A special thank you goes out to Jared and Mike for their commitment to making our streets safe for all who pass through Van Horne.

And if we are going to talk about snow, you may want to mark Saturday, December 11 on your calendar. The Van Horne Business Group will once again be hosting their annual Christmas event with a special visit from Santa! Stay tuned for more details as the date approaches.

Last month the council was honored to be able to vote on renaming our city park. It is with great joy that we can announce that the city park will now officially be known as the “Marty Junge Memorial Park.” The Van Horne Business Group is graciously working on donating new signage. Marty was passionate about restoring the park after the derecho, therefore it seems like a great place to honor his commitment and love for Van Horne.

As Veterans Day approaches, the council would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the servicemen and women. We all know that our freedom is not free and our appreciation is not limited to a single day on the calendar. Thank you for your sacrifice and commitment. The memorial that was damaged during the derecho is scheduled to be replaced soon. Continue to look for this work to be completed and take time to visit it. Thanks to all that contributed to this project, the honor is well deserved.

Lastly, the council would like to thank everyone that went out and voted earlier this month. There were two specific ballot items that we would like to highlight in this newsletter. Pat Gorkow was voted in as our next Mayor. Pat and his wife (Stacie) are longtime residents of Van Horne and have three children. He will be officially sworn in at a later date, but the Council would like to welcome him. Three Council members were also re-elected to another term. Thank you, Amy Knaack, Jim Parmenter, and Kim Fisher for continuing to serve Van Horne in your roles.
