Van Horne Newsletter – December 2021

Hello Van Horne Area Residents

As the calendar turns to December, it’s the season for many things. Van Horne residents are definitely in the Christmas spirit judging by all the lights and decorations around town. I hope you can find some time to take a drive around to enjoy the terrific job done by many. On Saturday the 11th, the Businessmen’s group welcomed Santa and over 60 kids and their families for their annual toy giveaway and breakfast. Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make this event happen and put smiles on so many faces.

It’s also the season for snow and ice. Please do Jared and Mike a favor and move your vehicles to accommodate plowing and sanding when conditions require it.

Be sure to notice our Veterans memorial has been re-installed recently and looks great. Thanks to all involved for seeing this through.

Also of note this month, the American Legion is having their Sandwich Supper on the 20th, and they’d appreciate your support.

Garbage pickup will be on Friday the 24th and Friday the 31th.

Lastly, when Stacie and I moved here 18 years ago with two little boys, I didn’t expect I’d be Van Horne’s mayor one day, but I’m grateful for the support from so many and humbled to follow in the footsteps of great community-minded people – most recently Ron Donald and Marty Junge. As the first mayor elected to a four-year term, I tend to believe ‘if you want good neighbors, be a good neighbor’ – and in 18 years, I’d found Van Horne is a great town filled with great neighbors. – Pat Gorkow, Mayor

VAN HORNE LIONS: We would like to thank all area residents who supported the Van Horne Lions Club this past year. Whether you attended a breakfast, made a donation, gave us your cans & bottles or donated food for one of our activities, we want you to know we truly appreciate each and every one of you!

Lions Club is all about serving others, our motto is “WE SERVE” and we could not do what we do without each of you!  Thank you so much!!

FUTURE GREEN: Future Green is looking for new members to help get new trees planted in Van Horne. The last few years, the group has struggled to find places to plant trees and to get volunteer hours. Now that Derecho 2020 has provided many bare spots in town. We need new members to get Future Green active again. The goal is to meet quarterly, more if needed, and to once again qualify for Tree City USA and to apply for grants to plant trees. If you are interested in helping or donating, please contact Darcy (319-361-0290) or Lou (641-660-6188)..
