Van Horne Community Newsletter
April 2023

Why did the chicken cross the road? Apparently not to get to Van Horne. It appears most of the residents who spoke up on the matter were overwhelmingly not in favor of changing our ordinance to allow chickens in town. As a result, the city council chose not to pursue any steps to modify it.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the assessment letters from the auditor’s office. Keep in mind that although many valuations went up significantly, don’t expect much of an increase in the city portion of your property taxes.

The FY 2024 budget has been approved. Some additional funds were allocated to seal coating of streets, but otherwise it’s mostly business as usual. We expect about $1.3 million in expenditures and slightly more than that in revenue.

We now have some details on new trees. Homeowners affected by the recent removal of trees in the city right-of-way (the area between the street and sidewalk) will be receiving a letter with all the details. Residents who don’t receive a letter, but would like to add a tree to their right-of-way should contact Linda at city hall – either at 228-8238 or vhclerk@netins.net for more details and to get on the list.

I hope you’ll join me at the Lions Club Breakfast on April 23. — Mayor Pat Gorkow
