Hello from the Mayor’s office!

Mayor will be at City Hall August 10 from 9 to 10 to talk with you about questions or concerns residents may have. Anyone is welcome. Property lines are a common issue when planning to build a fence, building or even plant a tree among other things. It is a good idea to check your property lines so you know where your responsibility lies for care and maintenance too. Benton County has a great resource for property information where you can view your property boundary on-line. Here is how to find your information – search the web for Beacon Benton County Iowa, click on BEACON, select the state of Iowa, the county of Benton, click property search and then enter your preference of property search by address or your name to find your property. Click MAP for a picture of the property boundary. A surveyor can provide exact information, but this will give you an idea of your property line. Regards, Bruce Visser, Mayor

Library News

The State Library of Iowa has announced that the Atkins Public Library has met the conditions for Tier 3 state accreditation as outlined in “In Service to Iowa: Public Library Standards Sixth Edition”. Achieving accreditation requires a significant, ongoing local commitment to high quality library services. The Atkins Public Library has been recognized for its efforts in all areas of library operations including governance and funding, staffing, library collection, services, public relations, access and facilities. The accreditation is valid through June 30, 2022. Thank you, Atkins Community, for helping achieve this higher level of accreditation.

The Reading Group book for September is “The Brickmaker’s Bride” by Judith Miller. Book Club will meet Monday, September 9th at 2 pm in the Atkins Library.

Public Works

The City is planning to do maintenance on the City well in the upcoming weeks. If all goes as planned, you should not see any interruption in your water service. Although there will probably be a boil advisory issued following the work. Do not be alarmed as this is standard for when this type of work is performed. The advisory should only be for 24 to 48 hours and does not mean that anything is wrong with the water. It is just a precaution while the testing is being done. Please call Todd Damon or City Hall with any questions at 319-446-7870.

Crater’s connection

Mark your calendars for November 16, 2019!

Yes, it’s that time again! CRAFTER’S CONNECTION will once again be back at the Atkins American Legion Auxiliary Hall and the Atkins Elementary School Gym. Featuring a great show of arts and crafts offered by some of Eastern Iowa’s best crafters. You will find a variety of handmade items from some very talented people. Make a day of it shopping for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions or just because. Enjoy a great lunch provided by the American Legion Auxiliary. I am also looking for new vendors to display their handmade crafts. Please contact me as soon as possible to secure your booth. For more information, or if you would like to participate, contact Pam Duball at 319-981-7755.

Farmers Market

I would like to thank all the Vendors, Musicians, Clubs and organizations, sponsors, my family and the Community for all you have done to help make the Farmers Market happen! While it is a great deal of work, it is all worth it when I see the Community coming together! If you have not been to Market yet…I would love to invite you out! Our remaining Market date is Sept. 15th!

Again, want to thank our Vendors and sponsorships! We could not do this without you! Wanted to share some expenses we have had this year alone to help make the Market a success. Our expenses include: newspaper ads, flyers, signs, banners (vinyl to make signs/changing banner to save expenses), envelope. stamps and copy paper, purchase for Kids Corner (3 tables, 2 tents), 1 tent for Farmers Market booth, musicians, this year we are trying t-shirts to help with marketing and getting us out there. These are just a few expenses that we have had.

If you are a non-profit vendor, you are FREE to have a spot at Market. We would love to see more local businesses joining us at market. If you would like to join us please let me know. Clubs and organizations, this is a great way to raise awareness for yourself. Crafters, fresh produce, vendors and Junker’s, we are always looking for you! If you have not been to the Atkins Farmers Market yet this year, we would love for you to come and join us! Please help support our amazing businesses/vendors! We do try to get a variety of vendors and we are ALWAYS looking and bringing new in! Each market tends to have something new!

If you have any questions/concerns, ALWAYS feel free to contact Pamela at 319-981-7755!
