SPORTS: CCA edges Benton boys’ in WaMaC action

A strong fourth quarter effort brought Benton close, but the Bobcats lost to Clear Creek Amana (17-5) in WaMaC boys’ basketball action, Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Van Horne, 76-74.

Aiden Harris led Benton with 21 points. Kyler Mahan added 19, Colin Buch scored 11 and Blake Daugherty had 10. Mahan also had 10 rebounds. Buch had 10 assists. Mahan blocked five shots. The team was 31 of 51 for field goals, 11 of 26 for three-pointers, and 1 of 3 for free throws. Benton had 31 rebounds, 3 steals and eight turnovers.

Christian Withrow scored 25 for CCA. Ryan Navara had 21. The team was 32 of 58 for field goals, 4 of 10 for three-pointers and 8 of 12 for free throws. CCA had 21 rebounds, eight steals and four turnovers.

Benton Community faced Vinton-Shellsburg in WaMaC boys’ basketball action on Thursday, Feb. 18, and lost to their rival, 55-37.

Aiden Harris scored 11 for Benton. With six rebounds each were Harris and Kyler Mahan. Isaac Cretin had three steals. Harris had five assists. The team was 13 of 44 for field goals, 6 of 20 for three-pointers and 5 of 6 for free throws. Benton had 25 rebounds, six steals and 12 turnovers.

CJ Rickels led the Vikings with 21 points. Ryan Moore added 12. The Vikings were 20 of 52 for field goals, 9 of 22 for three-pointers, and 6 of 9 for free throws. VS had 38 rebounds, six steals and nine turnovers.

Benton travels to Western Dubuque (14-4) on Monday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., as post-season action begins. Also in Benton’s 3A substate bracket are Waverly-Shell Rock (11-10), Wahlert (8-7), Crestwood (12-6), Charles City (9-12), Decorah (15-5) and Independence (8-12). The next round is Thursday, Feb. 25 at Western Dubuque. The substate final is Monday, March 1.
