Benton adds members to Athletic Hall of Fame

Benton Community inducted six 2020 graduates into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 15, at the Bobcat Co-ed. Inductees included Abby Brunssen, Clay Krousie, Ashtynn Lohrer, Blake Osborn, Ian Rupp and Mallory Thys.

The students being honored tonight have met all the criteria in order to be inducted, which includes receiving high honors at the state level.

Abby Brunssen was not able to due to her college conference volleyball tournament. Abby is the daughter of Darren and Cathy Brunssen of Atkins. During her time in high school Abby received many volleyball awards, holds three school records and her Senior year was selected to the 2nd Team All-State. Abby is currently playing volleyball at Northwest Missouri State University. Abby will be officially inducted in person with the Class of 2021 at a later date.

Clay Krousie is the son of John and Kristen Krousie. During his time at Benton, Clay broke 11 school records. He also received many District awards for his efforts on the football field and was also selected to the 2019 2nd Team All-State. Clay is currently studying business and UNI and is on the football team.

Ashtynn Lohrer. Ashtynn is the daughter of Lisa Garwood. Ashtynn was on the track team for three years as a sprinter that was converted to a 100 hurdler. Through her years on the team Ashtynn was an integral part of many different relay teams. In 2019 she was part of three State qualifying relays and was a member of the Shuttle Hurdle relay that placed 2nd in Class 3A.

Blake Osborn is the son of Ben and Brooke Osborn of Newhall. In his time at Benton, Blake qualified for the Drake Relays and for the State Track meet in 9 events. At the 2019 State Meet Blake finished 2nd in the 400 M. He currently holds 4 school records in track. Blake was also successful on the football field as a kicker. He also holds three football school records and was selected as a First Team All-State Kicker in 2018 and 2019. Blake is currently attending Hawkeye Community college and is running track.

Ian Rupp is the son of Jason and Amy Rupp of Atkins. Ian was a three-sport athlete receiving honors in all three. In football, he received many defensive awards and was named to the 2nd Team All-State for defense his senior year. Ian also received Academic All-State for football and baseball. Ian is currently attending Coe College and is playing football.

Mallory Thys is the daughter of Joel and Dawn Thys of Blairstown. During her time at Benton Mallory participated in many sports and activities. While on the track team, Mallory was a Drake Relays and State Qualifier. Mallory is a two time State Champion for the Shuttle Hurdle Relay and also State runner-up for the Shuttle Hurdle relay.
