Benton Community (7-2) battled Vinton-Shellsburg (6-2) in WaMaC action Friday, Dec. 17, at Vinton, and won the girls’ basketball contest, 50-39.
Benton went into the game ranked 15th in Class 4A, and Vinton-Shellsburg was 12th in Class 3A.
Benton was 17 for 42 for field goals, 8 of 22 for three-pointers, and 8 of 13 for free throws. The team had 35 rebounds, 17 assists, seven steals and blocked five shots. They had 16 turnovers. McKenna Kramer had 23 points for Benton, including 7 of 11 shooting for three-pointers. Zoey Junge added 11 points. Junge had nine rebounds. Grace Embretson added six rebounds. Emma Townsley had three assists. Jenna Tweet had two steals. Alyssa Tegeler blocked three shots.
Basketball action resumes on Jan. 4 when Benton travels to Clear Creek Amana.

The Bobcats were 19 of 46 for field goals, 7 of 22 for three-pointers and 23 of 26 from the line. They had 28 rebounds, 15 assists, and 13 steals. Benton had 11 turnovers. Evan Daugherty scored 27 for Benton, with 4 of 5 shooting for three-pointers. Adding 12 points each were Aiden Harris and Noah Franck. Harris had nine rebounds. Harris, Owen Tjelmeland and Isaac Cretin had four assists each.
Benton (1-5) travels to Center Point-Urbana (2-5) on Tuesday, Dec. 21, to close out 2021. They host Clear Creek Amana on Jan. 4.

Belle Plaine’s boys’ basketball team (5-2) earned another SICL win on the road when they defeated BGM (2-5) at Brooklyn on Friday, Dec. 17. Ben DeMeulenaere led Belle Plaine with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He also blocked five shots. Eli Ehlen added 10 rebounds. Wyatt Kuch had three assists and two steals. The team was 12 of 40 for field goals, 3 of 12 for three-pointers and 13 of 23 for three throws. They had 35 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, five blocked shots and 15 turnovers. BGM was 13 of 42 from the field, 2 of 11 for three-pointers and 6 of 10 for free throws. They had 20 rebounds, six assists, 12 steals, blocked five shots and had 11 turnovers.
