Van Horne Community Newsletter
Hello Van Horne Area Residents
One of the benefits of making it to mid-February in Iowa is knowing the grip of Winter is going to be fighting a losing battle soon. With a 40-degree average high at the end of the month and an average high of 55 by the end of March, our thoughts turn to warmer days. With that comes the welcome appearance of our Bobcat track athletes training on the city streets, so keep your eyes open. A ‘way to get after it!’ cheer in their direction would be most appropriate.
It’s also a good time for a reminder that the only unlicensed vehicles allowed on city streets are golf carts, which need to be operated by a licensed driver, equipped with a slow moving vehicle sign and a safety flag, and only between sunrise and sunset.
After asking for volunteers last month, the council would like to welcome Haley Schulte to the Board of Adjustment and Holly Hase to the Rec Board. A big thank you to both of these community-minded ladies! We have one remaining slot on the Rec Board, so let us know if you’d like to help.
If you’re around this Sunday the 20th, be sure to support the Lions Club at their Omelet Breakfast from 8:30 to noon, and then come right back at 12:30 for bingo. (A good way to take your mind off the no-more-Sunday-football blues.) The next day is the 3rd Monday of the month, which that means one thing: the Legion Sandwich Supper. Dine in or carry out!
Lastly, it’s not too early to welcome the return of the Relay For Life on June 3 and the Van Horne Party in the Park on June 11. More details to come.
Mayor Pat Gorkow
What’s the difference between an ordeal and an adventure? Attitude!”

We are excited to welcome Holly Hase to the Rec Board. The Rec Board is still looking for 1 more member to complete the needed 5-person board. We have a little something for all interests:
Enjoy projects and working with your hands? Past projects include installing new base anchors, annual setup of the batting cage, and painting.
Enjoy website development or communications? We manage our own website (www.vanhornerec.com) and also create these posts on Facebook.
Enjoy seeing people and working with others? We manage the concession stand (ordering supplies, helping to set-up/clean-up, and make sure our workers have what they need).
Passionate about baseball and softball? We work with other towns to create an Iowa Valley League Board that helps determine by-laws and rules for the league and manage the overall schedule.
Enjoy coordinating projects? You could help inform and make permanent changes to our facility. In recent years, this included installing two new scoreboards and creating a third practice ball field. We have more ideas for future projects and would love more input!
Enjoy looking good? We design uniforms and Hornet apparel for our players and families to enjoy.
There is a little something for everyone. And ultimately it’s a great way to get involved and give back to our wonderful community! Please consider giving Linda a call today 319-228-8238!
