Van Horne Community Newsletter
Hello Van Horne Area Residents
It’s March, and as promised in last month’s newsletter, Spring is here. Not a big stretch, since it officially begins on the 20th.
March also brings the time of year to approve the city’s budget, and as the rookie in the council chambers, it was an eye-opener for me. Here are some of the highlights of Fiscal Year 2023, which runs from July of this year through June of 2023:
- We expect about $1,075,000 to pass through the city’s hands.
- Approximately 40% of the city’s revenue comes from water, sewer and garbage fees, 30% from property taxes, and 30% from about 10 sources which include Road Use Taxes and the Local Option Sales Tax.
- Water, Sewer and Garbage account for about 40% of the expenditures, 35% for wages and road use, and the remaining 25% for utilities, insurance, debt service, city departments like the library, fire dept./first responders and parks and rec, as well as fees paid to the Benton County Sheriff’s Dept for law enforcement.
You can view the details of the budget on the city’s website. Enjoy all that the warmer weather has to offer, and I’ll see you at the American Legion’s Sandwich Supper on Monday, the 21st, the First Responder’s breakfast on April 3rd, and at the return of the Easter Egg Hunt in the City Park on April 9th.
